Cities & regions

Where to go and how they differ — a short guide to the main cities and resorts.

Phuket

The country's largest island and main resort, a base for yacht charters (the Chalong and Ao Po marinas). The Sino-Portuguese Old Town, the Big Buddha, the Patong/Kata/Karon beaches and an international airport hub.

Phi Phi

Islands of sheer limestone cliffs and turquoise water: Maya Bay (the beach from the film 'The Beach'), snorkelling coves, grottoes. The classic goal of a day yacht trip.

The Similan Islands

A national marine park in the Andaman Sea: Thailand's best diving and snorkelling, powder-white beaches and granite boulders. The season runs November to April.

Phang Nga

A bay of karst limestone stacks: James Bond Island (Ko Tapu), hidden lagoons in sea caves reached by kayak, mangrove channels. A cinematic landscape.

Krabi

The mainland coast opposite Phuket: the Railay peninsula with its rock climbing, the Ao Nang resort, the emerald islands of Ko Hong and Ko Lanta. Cliffs, beaches and quiet bays.

Racha and Coral

Islands near Phuket with the clearest water around: reef snorkelling, calm beaches, short day trips. Handy for a private day on the water.
